The 1/3 rule
A single session should not exceed one third of your weekly entertainment budget. If your weekly entertainment budget is ninety dollars, your session budget is thirty dollars. Stop at the threshold, win or lose.
The three numbers
- Buy-in. The maximum you will deposit at the start of the session. Once set, do not exceed it.
- Stop-loss. The threshold at which you leave the table. A common figure is half the buy-in. Once hit, leave.
- Time cap. The maximum length of the session. A common figure is 90 minutes. Once hit, leave.
Why a paper artefact
The session budget sheet is a paper artefact, not a digital one. The act of writing the numbers down is the discipline. The sheet is one page. The fields are: date, planned session length, planned buy-in, planned stop-loss, planned stake value.
What the desk does not recommend
The desk does not recommend chasing losses. A second deposit to recover the first is the most common pattern of harmful play. The platform's session reminder is there for a reason; opt in to it.
